Athoroughfare of armies and merchants in Roman times and of pilgrims in the Middle Ages, the town preserves first-rate artistic and historical vestiges, though sometimes hidden to the profane eye: Villa Ciardi-Baciocchi (17th-19th cent.) desired in its present aspect by Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon Bonaparte's sister, who commissioned to Charles Sambucy the
War Memorial restoration of both this summer residence and the park, peppered with Roman stone finds, as was the fashion. The adjacent sepulchral chapel dedicated to Maria Vergine Assunta, in English neo-Gothic style, was commissioned by her daughter Elisa Baciocchi Camerata. Inside is the lovely altarpiece of the Assumption by Augusto Tominz (1876). Similarly, the Parish church of S. Maria is rich in sacred works and precious liturgical fittings, among which an important shrine (13th, 14th-15th centuries). In 1917 the War Memorial was erected near the church.
