Set in a favourable
position close to
an artificial lake by
the intense blue
waters, the
municipality of Verzegnis (a
name place that does not refer
to any of its neighbourhoods)
offers to the view - in places
like Chiaicis, Chiaulis,
Intissans, Villa, Santo Stefano
- some remarkable typical
Carnic houses dating to the
17th and 18th centuries with
open galleries, often made of
tuff or the superior local
marble. The Pieve (rural
church) of S. Martino is very
old (dating around the year
1000), but its present-day
structure erected by Domenico
Schiavi

dates from 1750-60. Inside, the nave and
presbytery are decorated
with a delightful cycle of
frescoes by Antonio Schiavi
(18th cent.) reminiscent of
Tiepolo's style (the Virgin
in the Assumption, for
example, closely reminds
of Tiepolo's painting in the
Purità in Udine). In the
church of Chiaicis are
frescoes by Toni Menossi
from Udine (ca 1950),
while at Intissans are
frescoes by Giuseppe
Barazzutti from Gemona
(20th cent.).
