The town of Vajont was created
as the new hometown for the
inhabitants of Erto e Casso who
had survived the tragedy
of 9 October 1963 but were
forced to leave their houses.
The result is a typical 20th-century ideal
town, characterized by the rationalization
of the Renaissance model: a strictly
geometrical plan (a grid of perpendicular
streets and terraced

houses) resulting in
the metaphysical
coldness of social spaces,
though attempts have
been made at urban
upgrading. Aesthetic
clarity fits in gracefully,
instead, with everyday life
in the church and
cemetery, planned by
architects
G. Gresleri and
S. Varnier, who have
managed to infuse
a deep sense of
spirituality in the
essential volumes of
reinforced concrete.

Mosaic School has
