In the still
uncontaminated
territory of Taipana,
it is not unusual to
find splendid natural
corners, among which the
Slokot and Pod Malen
waterfalls in the short flow
of Torrent Gorgons, the
sources of Torrent Cornappo
with the impressive Certenja
waterfall, those of Rio
Bianco, the beech grooves of
Gran Monte at Monteaperta,
the woods of broad-leaved trees

near the Ponte della
Capra at Prossenicco, a rural
neighbourhood with
remarkable examples of
typical architecture, as the
so-called "casa nera" (black
house), with the ancient
hearth on the floor. Buildings
restored according to the
original architecture (often
with external balconies) may
be seen at Taipana, Platischis
and Debelllis (where also an
interesting old mill stands).
In the small church of
SS. Trinità at Monteaperta,
fragments of frescoes by
G.P. Thanner (ca. 1520)
are still preserved.
A nearby rock, according
to a legend, carries
the footprint of the Virgin.

The pleasant hilly area of Friuli, the
strip of land running from Gemona to
San Daniele almost to reach the suburbs
of Udine, has always been, through the
centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348
(also mentioned by
the Florentine historian
Filippo Villani), of
1511 (that halfdestroyed
