Sutrio is known as the town of the cramârs, that is the hawkers who operated in central Europe since the Middle Ages. The town has retained the original features of the ancient village, with houses still reflecting the style of typical architecture in Carnia. In the large parish
Stavolo on the Zoncolan church of Ognissanti, built since 1806 by Francesco Schiavi, frescoes by Giovanni Moro (1925) and an altarpiece by Austrian painter Lorenzo Stridl (1720) are found. In the other parish church of S. Ulderico, built between 1750 and 1760 by Domenico Schiavi, Venetian painters Pietro Antonio and Francesco Novelli in December 1789 left an important cycle of frescoes in the choir unfinished because "the mortar froze"; a good painting by Nicola Grassi (SS. Osvaldo, Antonio and Floriano, 1728) must be mentioned, too. The small church of S. Orsola at Nojaris contains a lovely wooden altar of the 18th century and interesting 14th-century frescoes.
