The area has been inhabited since
prehistory (Grotta delle Gallerie),
protohistory (Castellieri of Monte
S. Michele and Monte Carso), the
Roman age (remains of houses and
an aqueduct) and the Middle Ages (ruins of
the 12th-century castle of Moccò).
Excursions for Val Rosandra
start from
Bagnoli della
Rosandra,
where the
landscape changes dramatically: the green
meadows and hill of the alluvial plain give

slopes where the eagle owl builds its nest.
The Mario Premuda refuge (80 m above sea
level) and a CAI

Overlooking the valley is the small country
church of Sta. Maria in Siaris, known since
the 13th century. The Valley is dominated by
several lookout points from which the view is
superb (on Monte Stena there are the lookout
and church of S. Lorenzo, 1665).

Monrupino, San Dorligo
della Valle and
Muggia. Trieste,
the regional capital city, is
isolated in the middle, facing
the sea. An important
