At Pradamano,
whose name is
of clear Roman
origin, churches and
villas contain
several works of art, starting
from the parish church of
S. Cecilia with its ceiling
decorated with frescoes of
allegorical scenes full of
figures (18th cent.) by
painter Giovanni Domenico
Ruggieri from Udine,
probably the author also of
the two altarpieces
portraying the Crucifixion
and Trinity and Saints. The
church of Santissima
Annunziata is enlivened by
ex-voto paintings dating
from the 18th and 19th
centuries, lively and vivid in
colour, and by an altarpiece

by Lorenzo Bianchini
(1890), who is also the author
of some paintings in the
church of S. Giovanni
Battista at Lovaria. The
municipality is also the seat
of two prestigious villas:
Villa Giacomelli at
Pradamano is a majestic
building with park whose
construction began in 1852
on a design by Andrea Scala
from Udine, who envisaged
unusual architectural
solutions both outside and
inside. The large ballroom
ceiling was frescoed in 1862
by painter and photographer
Giuseppe Malignani while
the walls are decorated with
tempera views of Naples,
Rome, Florence and Venice
by painter-soldier Ippolito
Caffi from Belluno who died
at Lissa in 1866. At Lovaria,
instead, is Villa Ottelio, a
late 17th-century building
whose central hall is
embellished with Andrea
Urbani’s frescoes (ca. 1785)
with illusionist and
allegorical scenes, and
portraits of the four seasons
above the doors.

| FROM UDINE TO TAGLIAMENTO RIVER
|
|
 |
It is not certain that the name Udine is of
pre-Roman origin, as researchers support,
deriving from a word meaning 'mamma'
and then metaphorically 'hill'. The fact is,
however, that from the hill in the middle
of the city (which according to a
legend was formed with the earth
carried in Attila's soldiers'
helmets since the king, after...go
