Although traces
have been found
of a Neolithic village
called "of the
Piancada man",
the best-known ancient
settlement was Roman,
probably a military camp
between the Via Annia and
River Stella. In the 1970s,
the remains of a pedestrian
bridge were found as well
as the wreck

of a ship. In
the Middle Ages Palazzolo
was a thoroughfare and a
hospice for pilgrims was
probably founded at the
church of Madonna del
Suffragio, former dei
Battuti (13th, 16th and 19th
centuries). According to
popular tradition, Attila is
said to have stayed at
Casa Zanelli
(14th-16th centuries) after
he had sacked Aquileia,
thus sparing the village
from destruction.
Lovely art works, though
probably not of the highest
quality, are contained in
the Parish church
(a 17th-18th-century
Virgin of the Rosary
attributable to the Dutch
painter Heinrich Meyring)
and in the votive church
of S. Bartolomeo
(frescoes of th
14th, 17th, 18th and 20th
centuries).
