Although traces have been found of a Neolithic village called "of the Piancada man", the best-known ancient settlement was Roman, probably a military camp between the Via Annia and River Stella. In the 1970s, the remains of a pedestrian bridge were found as well as the wreck
Casa Zanellli-Attilia of a ship. In the Middle Ages Palazzolo was a thoroughfare and a hospice for pilgrims was probably founded at the church of Madonna del Suffragio, former dei Battuti (13th, 16th and 19th centuries). According to popular tradition, Attila is said to have stayed at Casa Zanelli (14th-16th centuries) after he had sacked Aquileia, thus sparing the village from destruction. Lovely art works, though probably not of the highest quality, are contained in the Parish church (a 17th-18th-century Virgin of the Rosary attributable to the Dutch painter Heinrich Meyring) and in the votive church of S. Bartolomeo (frescoes of th 14th, 17th, 18th and 20th centuries).
