Osoppo has very
ancient origins:
already inhabited in
Roman times, it is
mentioned by poet
Venanzio Fortunato and by
Paolo Diacono, who talks
about the great historic events
taking place in its fortress in
the 16th century with Girolamo
Savorgnan, in Napoleon's
times, in

1848, when heroic
Friuli volunteers resisted the
Austrian siege for more than six
months, and during the Second
World War. Near the fortress
is the church of S. Pietro,
several times destroyed;
at the foot of the hill, the
parish church of S. Maria
ad Nives preserves a famous
altarpiece by Pellegrino da
San Daniele (Enthroned Virgin
with Child and Saints,
1494-95), apart from paintings
by Pomponio Amalteo
(16th cent.), Biagio Cestari
(18th cent.) and Domenico
Fabris (19th cent.).

The pleasant hilly area of Friuli, the
strip of land running from Gemona to
San Daniele almost to reach the suburbs
of Udine, has always been, through the
centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348

the Florentine historian
Filippo Villani), of
1511 (that halfdestroyed
