By destroying a series of rustic
buildings, the 1976 earthquake
has partly deleted the traces of the
ancient rural society; however,
some districts still retain buildings
with balconies, mostly dating to the
18th century, responding to architectural styles
typical of the
pre-Alps area
(especially in
the recently
restored
neighbourhood
of Cologna
and in the
Lucardi
district).
Also

the old
churches
(which,
however, did
not hold prestigious artistic features) were
destroyed, but the parish church of
S. Elena Imperatrice was rebuilt on a design
by Augusto Romano Burelli who, keeping
the peculiar configuration of the town in
mind, has brilliantly transformed the apse
in a sort of keep. The same designers and his
collaborators also created the new
Town Hall (1979-1982).

The pleasant hilly area of Friuli, the
strip of land running from Gemona to
San Daniele almost to reach the suburbs
of Udine, has always been, through the
centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348
(also mentioned by
the Florentine historian
Filippo Villani), of
1511 (that halfdestroyed
