The Rural Church of the Abbey of
S. Gallo (Pieve Abbaziale) at Moggio,
creating a monumental monastery
complex together with the adjoining
Benedictine cloister, was restructured
after the 1976 earthquake which had almost
destroyed it (but it had been severely damaged
also by the earthquakes of 1348 and 1511). The
abbey was
founded in
1084-86

following a
donation and

in 1119
(depending on
the Abbey of
S. Gallo in
Switzerland).
Today the
church shows a large Baroque high altar,
historic frescoes by Leonardo Rigo (1893) and
a fresco by C.B. Tiozzo (ca. 1985) on the nave
ceiling. Moreover, the same church also boasts
an unusual chandelier made of carved wood
and wrought iron, more than three and a half
metres high, dating from the
18th century, as well as a
sumptuous painted walnut
Crucifix recently found and
dated 1466. The church of
Trasfigurazione is also
worth a visit, where Nicola
Grassi painted in 1735 a
cycle of thirteen panels
with the Apostles and the
Saviour.

The land that from Moggio leads to
Tarvisio following the valley of River
Fella and its tributaries and the
valley of Torrent Gailitz whose
waters, after flowing through
Tarvisio, flow into the
River Gail and
finally into the
Black Sea,
is a land boasting
centuries of history,
culture and art, a
land already well...go
