As for buildings
and monuments,
the town has
changed its aspect
since the 1976
earthquake, during which
the castle of Prampero was
destroyed: born in the Middle
Ages and several times
demolished, rebuilt and
restructured, the castle
had become a complex
bundle revolving
around the internal
courtyard, with manor
house and elegant,
airy Renaissance
loggia; it is

being
rebuilt now.
The new parish
church of
SS. Trinità, built
around 1985 on a
design by
Giovanni Mauro
and Gianfranco
Di Lazzaro,
replaces the
previous one by Girolamo
D'Aronco (1897) with wall
paintings by Valerio
Mariani (1928). In the
church of S. Giacomo
at Billerio, frescoes by
Francesco Barazzutti
(1900) and an altarpiece
by Giuseppe Buzz
(St. Nicola,
18th cent.) are
notable.

The pleasant hilly area of Friuli, the
strip of land running from Gemona to
San Daniele almost to reach the suburbs
of Udine, has always been, through the
centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348
(also mentioned by
the Florentine historian
Filippo Villani), of
1511 (that halfdestroyed
