The Church of Santa Maria in
Monte (1521), built on the site of
a Venetian fort, overlooks the town of
Fogliano, showing inside several 16thcentury
frescoes (episodes from the
|

Gospel and Saints): those on the triumphal arch
and on the apse intrados (1572) are very well
executed and attributed to Secante. Two
kilometres away from the centre is the renown
Sacrario Militare di Redipuglia, the most
important war memorial in Italy, with the tombs
of about 100,000 soldiers killed in the Great
War. The imposing monumental staircase lined
with cypresses covers the side of Mount Sei
Busi, which was the background of epic fights
during the war. A small Museum of war relics
may be visited on the opposite Colle S. Elia.
