These two towns are inevitably
confronted with their past, built
as they are facing Mount Toc: on
9 October 1963, after repeated but
guiltily ignored warning signs, a
landslide came down from the mount causing
the terrifying tragedy of Vajont.
This was an event whose memory-

made inevitable by the
view of the dam, dramatically majestic in its
soaring structure- still today cannot but rouse
the conscience of visitors and bestows a special
quality to the sacred Via Crucis held in Erto
every Good Friday, which seems more real here
than anywhere else. If a visit to the old parish
church in Erto (showing inside a Crucifix by
A. Brustolon, 17th cent.) and the new parish
church designed by G. Gresleri and S. Varnier
(1971-1974) is worthwhile, the metaphysical
houses-towers at Casso are a definite must,
among which the church of SS. Gervasio
and Protasio (18th cent.) is set.

The territory ranges from the
pleasant plains at the foot of the
mountains in the Aviano area
(where the silent jewel of Castel
d'Aviano stands out) to the doublefaced
high mountains, showing the
modern tourist
mountain resorts on the one hand
(of which Piancavallo, with its
ski slopes, cross-country
trails and aspirations to
become a little...go
