Located on the
border area
north-east of
Monfalcone, along
the -strada del
Vallone-, it is populated by
a Slav-speaking community.
Remains of protohistorical
settlements were found in
the whole territory,
especially at Castellazzo,
where fragments of a
castelliere wall are still
visible. All monuments of
later ages were destroyed
during World War I, as this
was one of the

worst areas
of the war front. Every now
and then, remains of
trenches and other war
structures surface among
the karst landscape of the
municipality, which is
mostly pleasant around the
lake by the same name,
today a part of the
Natural Reserve
of the Lakes of Doberḍ
and Pietrarossa.
From an environmental and
anthropological point of
view, the typical Carso
stone rustic houses are
remarkable.
