Colloredo di Monte Albano revolves
around its prestigious castle, a
bundle of buildings dating to various
periods that make up a spectacular
complex in a panoramic position, halfdestroyed
by the 1976 earthquake but already
mostly rebuilt. Noble households had their
residence here; even Ippolito Nievo wrote here
most of his masterpiece, Le Confessioni di un
Italiano. Among the works of art in the castle,
an outstanding cycle of frescoes by Giovanni
da Udine

(ca. 1556) was partly saved and
restored. In the parish church of SS. Andrea
and Mattia, a lovely Annunciation by Gaspare
Diziani (1749) and an altapiece by Giulio
Quaglio (Virgin of the Rosary and Saints,
ca. 1695) are worth seeing. Other lovely
14th-century frescoes are found in the small
church of S. Pietro, while the church of
S. Lorenzo in Lauzzana contains an
altarpiece by Agostino Ridolfi (1694).

The pleasant hilly area of Friuli, the
strip of land running from Gemona to
San Daniele almost to reach the suburbs
of Udine, has always been, through the
centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348
