Already populated in Roman times,
nowadays this municipality of the
Gorizia Collio is especially renown for
wine production. The Parish Church
of Sta. Maria, rebuilt in 1882, has a
1569 baptismal font and a few baroque altars,
among which the high altar, with the statue of
the Virgin by the Pacassis, must be
mentioned. Another exquisite Baroque
altar, with marble panel portraying
the Nativity, is found in the
small Church of S. Trinità
(1524). The pleasant hilly

landscape is
the perfect
background
for the
Castle of
Spessa, former
Rassauer and Torriani, and its luxurious park,
which was eclectically rebuilt on a project by
the Trieste architect Ruggero Berlam in neomedieval
style. The castle sumptuous interiors
mirror the taste of 19th-century high middle
classes. In 1773, the well-known Venetian
adventurer Giacomo Casanova was a guest at
the castle. In the neighbourhood of Russiz
Superiore some remains of
defensive structures probably
mark the site of another
ancient castle.
