Bordano is nowadays
generally renown
as the "town of
butterflies". Since the
urban and artistic
wealth of the town was wiped
out by the 1976 earthquake,
the Town Council has
enhanced a few of the
environmental assets of the
area, in particular the presence
of several species of butterflies
in the surrounding mountains:
hence the possibility of an
economic and

tourist revival
of the town. The most evident
effect of this is certainly given
by the murales with butterflies
that embellish both private
and public buildings in town
and in the neighbourhood of
Interneppo. Such murales,
normally very large and
executed by well-known
artists, are a distinguishing
mark. Pleasant excursions may
be made to Mount
S. Simeone, where a votive
chapel stands affording a
comprehensive view of Carnia
and Friuli; other itineraries
lead excursionists to Mount
Festa and the nearby Lake
of Cavazzo. Both civil and
religious buildings in town are
all modern in style and the
Town Hall was designed by
architect Vittorio Battigelli.

centuries, subject to earthquakes: suffice
it to mention the appalling
earthquakes of 1348
(also mentioned by
the Florentine historian
Filippo Villani), of
1511 (that halfdestroyed
