Attimis is the
district of
castles, once
prestigious noble
residences, now
reduced to ruins, though still
visitable: the "Castello
superiore" and the "Castello
inferiore", the Castle of
Partistagno and others, they
all tell stories of an eventful
distant past, witnessed also
by the noble residences of
Attimis Strassoldo and
Attimis. Not far from the
Castle of Partistagno, the
presbytery of the small 14thcentury
church of S. Osvaldo
still shows on the walls and
conch frescoes portraying a
Blessing Christ and the
Apostles, attributed to an

15th-century Friulian painter, a follower of the
Padua painting schools of the
time: perfectly correct in
form, the unknown artist left
lovely figures both in posture
and colour, although a bit
lacking in spirit. In the small
church of S. Silvestro at
Racchiuso, now the vestry of
the new parish church, 16thcentury
frescoes may be seen,
probably by Gian Paolo
Thanner (Blessing Holy
Father, Virgin with Child and
Saints, Doctors of the
Church, Virgin Saints). What
is to be noticed here is not
only the "horror vacui"
animating - as always -
|
|
Thanner's
painting, but also
the enchanting series of angel
musicians playing such a
variety of instruments that
they represent a real
anthology of the instruments
used in Friuli at the time. A
1448 inscription on the
imposing bell tower is
particularly remarkable
because it is written in the
Friuli language:
"MCCCCXLVIII fo chome /
nchat lo tor de Reclus / lo
primo di de cugno / Pieri e
Toni so fradi di Vergnŕ".
More frescoes are found in
the church of S. Antonio
Abate at Forame: scenes from
the New Testament datable to
the 15th century, but more
important yet is the wooden
altar of 1701 dated and signed
by master carver Bartolomeo
Ortari (Jernej Vrtav) from
Caporetto, appreciated for its
Baroque exuberance, lively
colours, design harmonising
with the sculptures. Good
examples of rural architecture
are found in Attimis, the
neighbourhoods of Forame
and Porzus, and in villages.

Cividât no je une vile, ma une
ponte di citât /Cividale is not a
village but a small town, as the
lines of a famous Friulian villotta
rightly sing: Cividale, in fact, since
its foundation by the
Romans, was the
main city in the area and under
the Lombards the capital of
the Duchy of Friuli. Still
today, thanks to its
urban plan, its
monuments, the...go
