This is a lovely
town of the Gorizia
Collio, attractive for
its sweet hilly
landscape and the
excellent quality of its wines,
though historical and artistic
traits are not lost. The Castle
of Trussio (today a famous
restaurant), with its two
imposing towers in a panoramic
position, is a must: originally
built in the 13th century, it was
adjusted in the 16th and 17th
centuries. Of medieval origin
and Renaissance remodelling
is also the Castle of Ruttars,
still preserving some original
parts as the tower of Montelongo.
The neighbourhoods
preserve some interesting
churches: the Church of Rosario
(probably 16th century) at
Lonzano Inferiore

 |
boasts a
beautiful statue of the Virgin;
at Lonzano Zorutti (named in
honour of Friuli poet Pietro
Zorutti who was born here in
1792), the 18th-century
Church of S. Giuseppe has
a lovely bell gable; a porticoed
16th-century church is found at
Mernico, while in the
small church of Scriò some
popular paintings by
Giacomo Meneghini (Jacum
pitor) from Cividale, who
worked in the area between
the 1800s and 1900s, may
be seen; finally, the Parish
Church of S. Giuseppe at
Dolegna is a post-war
reconstruction (1926) of a
18th-century building.

Among the smallest in Italy, Gorizia
province is a unique casket of natural,
historical and cultural beauty, benefiting
from mild climate most
of the year, a place
where, to the
north, the hilly
landscape
of the
Collio area - frequently
terraced and world
renown for its winesopens
to Europe through
the valleys of the Isonzo
and Vipacco Rivers. The
central-eastern part of the
